Cleveland Game Developers: Unity Workshop

We're excited to announced that we will be leading an Intro to Unity workshop on April 7th from 1-5pm at the Cleveland Institute of Art.

This beginner-level workshop will introduce you to core Unity concepts, expose you to workflows and asset pipelines, and give you a sense of how you can put together a game in Unity. Over the course of the workshop we will be building a physics-based carnival game from start to finish.

All participants will get a copy of the project files containing scripts, graphics and sound (as well as a finished project) that they can use to code-along (or refer to later), but we'll also be broadcasting the main screen online so that you can follow-along with the presentation on your own laptop if you dislike reading code from distant projector screens. Laptops are not required (but helpful).

This workshop will have some C# in it, but trust us- C# is not a very difficult language to work with. Even if you're only peripherally familiar with programming you'll find you can "read" the code involved without too much trouble... and if you're interested learning C#, this project can help you bootstrap your knowledge. We'll try to explain any complicated C# as we write it.

Broadly speaking, the workshop will cover:

  • Unity: What's Up with That?
  • The Unity Interface
  • GameObjects, Transforms, and You
  • The Input Loop
  • Physics Phunctions
  • Sound and Music

We will not be covering:

  • Art and Music assets creation
  • Networking
  • iOS deployment
  • JavaScript (the other language Unity supports)

Registration

The workshop will cost:
$10 - general admission
$5 - students admission
$0 - CIA student admission

Registration is required ahead of time (especially if you want to get the workshop materials). You can find details and registration instructions here: http://cgdunity.eventbrite.com/

Our thanks go to Knut Hybinette and the Cleveland Institute of Art for providing the facilities for this workshop.
